What is Visual Editor in WordPress?

WordPress visual editor mode is a lot like Microsoft Word. When you make edits to your post using the WordPress visual editor, it will look just like it does when you publish your post.

WordPress comes with TinyMCE, which is an open source HTML editor and is one of the most advanced WYSIWYG HTML editors.

TinyMCE mimics the behavior of popular publishing tools such as Microsoft Word and has a lot of features that are found in Microsoft Word like a toolbar making it easy to format your content.

Visual Editor makes writing posts and formatting them easy. It eliminates the need to write them in HTML. Since the visual editor is a visual text editor you can see the image right inside the editor like you would see on the published post page. The toolbar provided in visual editor has a lot of great features that make aligning your text, images, and buttons easy.

I provided an image of the toolbar below that showcases all of the formatting options I just mentioned including making the font bold and italic, aligning paragraphs, spell checking, and adding quotes.

You will see the “add media” button in the top left that allows you to add images to your post.

In the top right you will see where it says visual and text. This is the WordPress visual editor and WordPress text editor. You can easily toggle between the visual editor and text editor.

I do not recommend that you toggle between the visual editor and the text editor when you’re writing your post. It’s very common that when doing so, the formatting of your post gets messed up. Click hereย to learn more about what can happen if you switch between the WordPress visual and text editor mode while creating your post and what you can do to fix the problem if it happens.

One of the cool things about TinyMCE is that features can be added to it. This is helpful to WordPress plugin developers as they can add features they might want to visual editor’s toolbar.

Another cool thing about TinyMCE is themes can add their own styles to the visual editor so that they can use the same style rules as the live site.

Why Remove Visual Editor In WordPress?

Theย WordPress visual editor is an easy way for beginners to write content in WordPress. It comes with a great user interface with useful options where you can choose colors and a format when writing your posts.

One of the cool things about WordPress Visual Editor is it can be set up to use the same fonts and colors as what you are using in your WordPress theme.

Many advanced users tend to prefer the plain text editor over the visual editor in WordPress. The text editor is very basic. It has basic formatting buttons and shows you the raw HTML otherwise known as plain text when you create your content.

One of the biggest complaints about the visual editor in WordPress is when you switch between visual and text mode, it will usually cause the formatting of your post to be off.

It’s even common that the visual editor in WordPress will add additional formatting that’s not needed.

As you can guess, this can be incredibly annoying and is why users want to remove, disable or hide the visual editor in WordPress.

Let’s dive into how to remove visual editor in WordPress.

I want to start off by showing you an image of the WordPress visual editor so you can see what it looks like before we remove the visual editor mode in WordPress.

When you log in and start writing your new post, we want the HTML mode to load automatically instead of the visual mode. To do this, you want to start off by logging in to your WordPress admin panel.

You want to go to Users > Your Profile.

You will then see something very similar to the image shown below:

You want to select, “Disable the visual editor when writing posts” option.ย  Once you do this, you won’t have to deal with formatting errors that are caused by WordPress.

You might be worried that you will now have to enter things strictly in HTML, but that is not the case. You’re still going to see a bar that can help you edit posts, it just isn’t going to be as rich featured as the visual editor.

The screenshot below shows you what it will look like once you remove the visual editor in WordPress. Keep in mind that it might look slightly different on yours as this area can change little by little over time, but it’ll be real close to this. We recommend using this mode without the visual editor if you have a basic understanding of HTML.
