What Is A Primary Domain Name

Before we get into the steps on how to change primary domain in Hostgator let’s go over what a primary domain name is.

A primary domain name is the primary domain name that you choose and register with your domain provider which in this case would be Hostgator.

When you purchased your Hostgator hosting, you did one of three things. You registered a new domain name with Hostgator, transferred it from another domain registrar like Godaddy or Namecheap, or changed the nameservers of your domain name.

Hostgator Primary Domain Tips Before You Get Started

Some things to keep in mind regarding the Hostgator primary domain change:

  • When you update the primary domain from the Hostgator billing customer portal, it will change the primary domain on both the server and in the billing.
  • When adding a new primary domain to your Hostgator account make sure you have the domain name purchased.
  • If you have subdomains that are set up with your current primary domain or your primary domain is ran on a CMS like WordPress, Joomla, or Drupal then changing your domain name can cause issues with accessing your site. How To Change Primary Domain In Hostgator Cpanel

The first step in our how to change primary domain in Hostgator guide is to log in to the Hostgator Cpanel.

Once logged in scroll down to the files section. You will see backups listed. Click this to continue changing your primary domain in your Hostgator account.

You will now be on the backup page.

hostgator-full-website-backup

Before we change the primary domain in Hostgator’s cPanel, we need to download a full website backup just in case any trouble happens. Better safe than sorry. Hostgator does provide a full site backup, but it’s done randomly once a week.

If something happens and you rely on Hostgator to backup your site just be aware more than likely you will be put in a support ticket queue to get your site back up and running.

You will see under the full backup section the button that says download a full website backup. Click this to continue in changing your primary domain in Hostgator.

Next, just select the generate backup button, and then your backup will begin downloading.

Next, from the Hostgator cPanel scroll down to the files section. Click on file manager to continue in changing your primary domain in your Hostgator account.

hostgator-file-manager

You want to create a new folder that is named after the old domain. Click the folder tab towards the top left menu to do this.

new-folder-hostgator-cpanel

Next, move the root files from the old domain name. I’ll call the old domain example.com. Make sure it’s not the files from the other sub-domain or addon domain folders.

You’re moving the root files of the old domain in which I’m calling example.com from /public_html to ?public_html/example.com.

Now, you will have two scenarios. You can assign an addon domain as the primary domain, or you can add the new domain to the account as an addon domain and making that the primary domain.

For example, if you had the domain previously added as an addon domain, then you would move the files from /public_html/newdomainname.com folder to /public_html.

If the domain name you want to use for the primary domain in your Hostgator account was recently bought or transferred from another domain registrar, you just need to upload the files directly in the ?public_html directory.

Next, in our how to change primary domain in Hostgator guide you will want to login to the Hostgator billing client area.

Click on the packages tab found towards the top left of the page.

hostgator-packages-customer-portal

Click the settings icon on the right side of the page. Click change my domain.

If you signed up with Hostgator and purchased any plan other than the hatchling plan you can have an unlimited number of websites.

If you haven’t already purchased your addon domain otherwise known as an additional domain name I recommend Namecheap.

Namecheap is one of the top domain providers today and is cheaper than other domain providers.

What Is A Hostgator Addon Domain?

Let’s start by answering a common question that is asked which is what a Hostgator addon domain is? An addon domain in Hostgator is a domain that you can create within your Hostgator Cpanel.

An excellent way to think of it is you have multiple Hostgator hosting packages, and they are all sharing the same Hostgator Cpanel.

With an addon domain, you can create email addresses, forwarders, and everything else you can do like your primary domain name.

To put it in simpler terms an addon domain is how you would add a second website to Hostgator.

The addon domain shares the same Hostgator Cpanel and the server. Hostgator offers unlimited addon domains for all of their hosting accounts except for the Hatchling plan.

Is Hostgator Hosting Good For A UK Site?

Is Hostgator Good For UK Hosting?

So is Hostgator good for sites in the UK? The answer to that question is yes, Hostgator is a wonderful choice for sites located in the UK.

Now, let’s go in-depth on why Hostgator is an excellent choice for sites located in the UK.

Below, I have answered the most popular questions that I see being asked online regarding is Hostgator good for UK hosting.

Will there be speed issues by using Hostgator over a hosting provider located in the UK?

Most sites in the UK that are hosted with Hostgator have almost the site speed as if a US visitor loaded the site.

We use Hostgator on this blog, and one thing that we implement is the free CDN service known as Cloudflare.

Cloudflare is entirely free, and it speeds up your site as well as making it more secure providing security for your website. Cloudflare acts as a proxy between your site visitors and the Hostgator servers.

Cloudflare has data centers all around the world. Cloudflare stores a cached copy of your site and will load your site from the closest data center to your site visitor.

Currently, Cloudflare has several data centers located throughout the UK and 200 data centers in total around the world.

UK Hosting companies are not as reliable as Hostgator

Hostgator provides competitive and affordable hosting prices compared to most hosting companies in the UK.

With Hostgator, you can get hosting for as low as $2.75 a month depending on what term you choose for your hosting plan.

Hostgator provides a 99.9% uptime guarantee and almost at all times it is at 100%. There’s a reason why Hostgator is one of the top web hosts today. Their hosting is reliable. I’ve never had any trouble with them.

Does Hostgator have UK based data centers or are all the data centers located in the USA?

Hostgator’s servers are not located in the UK. Hostgator’s servers are located in the United States. Hostgator’s data centers are located in Houston, Texas and Provo, Utah. You might be asking yourself.

If Hostgator’s servers are located in the US why would Hostgator be a good choice for sites based in the UK? The speed difference in the UK and US are minimal.

I use Hostgator on this very blog, and I actively get traffic and run traffic from the UK to my site, and the speed is not a problem.

What if I need to get a hold of Hostgator. Will the time difference be a problem?

Hostgator provides 24/7 support via chat, email, and phone. Hostgator is just a chat, email or phone call away. This is another excellent reason why Hostgator is good for a UK site.

Is Hostgator A Scam Or Is Hostgator Legit?

Is Hostgator A Scam Or Is Hostgator Legit?

To answer the question is Hostgator a scam or is Hostgator legit, Hostgator is legitimate. Hostgator is in no way a scam. Here’s why.

Hostgator has been one of the top leaders when it comes to web hosting services for over 15 years, and they are one of the most popular hosting companies around today.

The Better Business Bureau has credited Hostgator with the best A+ rating which is in no way an easy thing to get for a company. Hostgator powers over 8,000,000 domains all around the world.

That is a lot of domains. And to have a perfect A+ Better Business Bureau rating with those many domains that is no easy thing to come by.

If Hostgator was a scam, they wouldn’t still be in business and wouldn’t have an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. They in no way would be one of the top web hosting providers that exist today.

I personally use Hostgator and have nothing but great things to say about them. This blog is run on their cloud hosting plan and the service is excellent!

Before we get into why someone might say that Hostgator is a scam and that Hostgator is legitimate let’s get to know a little about Hostgator.

Who is Hostgator

Hostgator was founded in 2002, and Hostgator is one of the top 10 largest web hosting companies today.

Hostgator employs over 850 people and has more than 12,000 servers that serve more than 8,000,000 domains around the globe. Hostgator is known for its reliability and high-quality services.

hostgator-home-page

Hostgator’s main focus is their shared web hosting service. Hostgator offers incredible WordPress hosting, cloud hosting, VPS hosting, dedicated hosting, and some other services.

Now let’s get into why others are saying Hostgator is a scam and see if the claims hold any truth regarding if Hostgator sucks.

Common Complaints About Hostgator

Next, in our is Hostgator a scam or is Hostgator legitimate post let’s go over a list of the most common complaints that are out there regarding Hostgator.

The web hosting plans are not as cheap as other hosting providers

Hostgator hosting pricing starts at just $2.75 a month and goes up from there depending on the term that you buy their hosting for. $2.75 a month is very reasonable.

In fact, most other hosting companies don’t offer hosting as low as this. You’ll usually see hosting from $2.95 a month up to the most common cost of $3.95 a month.

The most expensive way to buy Hostgator’s hosting is by paying monthly. It might sound good at first but paying monthly you’ll pay a higher price than a longer-term.

Most hosting companies don’t offer monthly hosting. You have to get at least a 12-month term. So the fact that Hostgator provides a monthly hosting offer can be great for many people.

Hostgator holds back the performance of accounts after the 45-day money-back guarantee

Hostgator is in no way holds back the performance of accounts after the 45-day money-back guarantee.

Hostgator has partnered with the world’s leading and best collocation providers, and Hostgator has factory-tested Dell servers placed in the state-of-the-art data centers in Houston and Dallas, Texas, that range from 22,000 to an astounding 78,000 square feet.

These data centers are equipped with a certified Cisco network and utilize fibers from the top companies today including AT&T, Global Crossing, Level3, Time Warner, and MCI to name a few.

In addition, every Hostgator customer has access to and can take advantage completely free of the Cloudflare content delivery network which speeds up websites to site visitors.

Cloudflare speeds up websites by distributing your site’s data to 23 data centers throughout North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia.

If someone in Australia, for example, wants to load your site. It’ll take them longer than someone located near the server in Austin, Texas.

However, using Cloudflare with Hostgator the person loading your site in Australia will get a copy of your site loaded from the data center located in Australia ensuring a quick load time for them.

I use Cloudflare on this blog and love using Hostgator and Cloudflare together. Here’s a cool fact about Hostgator.

Hostgator is now faster than ever. A lot of the blog posts and forums with people saying Hostgator is a scam are typically from years ago. Even then they were in no way a scam. Hostgator has never been a scam.

I’ve actually tested several of the top web hosting providers on my sites and Hostgator actually won when it came to performance and speed every time! Hostgator stays up to date with technology and are always developing new technologies to better serve their customers.

The technical support team is slow on email ticket time and live chat

Hostgator provides 24/7 technical support via three different methods. Phone, live chat, and via email. What’s cool about Hostgator’s technical support team is they hire engineers with 5+ years of experience.

I always utilize the live chat feature with requests, questions, or concerns that I have. The response time is really fast. A lot of times within 1 minute I’m chatting with a chat agent.

This can vary depending on when you connect on live chat at certain times are busier than others. As far as connecting with them on the phone you can usually connect with an agent within a minute after you’ve gone through the automated process.

For email ticket requests generally within 5 hours, you can get a response to correct whatever needs to be corrected or to answer any question or concern you have. These are very good wait times.

Think about a company powering over 8 million domains. That is a lot of customers to tend to. Hostgator does a great job!

Hostgator also has a support portal where customers can type in and search for answers regarding their requests.

The articles will explain what you are looking for and a lot of times provide a video tutorial as some may learn better with video. I recommend you try this out first before connecting to an agent as this could save you time.

Video Tutorial: Is Hostgator GDPR Compliant

Is Hostgator GDPR Compliant or Not?

Is Hostgator GDPR Compliant

So is Hostgator GDPR Compliant or not? Hostgator is, in fact, GDPR Compliant. Hostgator became GDPR Compliant on May 25, 2018.

In order for Hostgator to become GDPR Compliant, it entailed them to do a bunch of work “behind the scenes,” such as reviewing and updating their agreements, privacy policies, internal processes, features, and templates to make sure everything was GDPR Compliant.

What is the GDPR?

GDPR stands for the General Data Protection Regulation that will start being enforced on May 25, 2018. The GDPR was passed by the European Parliament to create a safer place on the web.

The GDPR is a data privacy law across the states of the European Union or otherwise known as the (EU). The purpose of the GDPR is to provide the EU residents rights over their personal data and how it is processed or used.

What is Considered Personal Data?

The GDPR defines personal data as, information relating to a person that can be identified, directly or indirectly, by reference to an identifier such as a persons name, identification number, location data, or online identifier, or to one or more factors specific to the genetic, mental, economic, cultural, physiological, physical or social identity of that identifiable person.

The GDPR notes in their privacy law that online identifiers can constitute personal data which are provided by the following: devices, applications, tools, protocols known as IP (Internet Protocol) addresses, Radio Frequency Identification known as (RFID) tags and Cookie identifiers, and similar web tracking technologies such as Google Analytics, etc.

How does this affect you?

Any individuals, companies, or businesses that provide services to residents located in the EU need to comply with the data privacy law.

If you collect personal data in the form of collection, processing, storage, or transmittal of the following data, you need to comply with the GDPR by May 25, 2018.

If you are an EU resident, the GDPR law will apply to your personal data that is in your Hostgator account.

If you want to learn more about what Hostgator collects and how Hostgator handles your personal data you can click here to review their Privacy Policy that explains everything they collect.

Hostgator uses examples of how your personal data might be used with them as well which is helpful.

What rights does the GDPR provide to EU residents?

If you are an EU resident you have rights to how your personal data is handled under the GDPR. Here are those rights with respect to Hostgator:

You have the right to access

Hostgator makes it easy to get access to your personal data information. If you or your customer is curious you can ask Hostgator what personal data is used, why it is used, and where the personal data information is used.

Your right to rectification

Hostgator makes it easy for you or your customer to correct, revise or remove any data that is stored by Hostgator. You can find the steps to do so outlined in their Privacy Policy.

Your right to be forgotten

Hostgator permanently deletes your Hostgator account information when you cancel services with them.

Your right to restrict processing

If at anytime you, or your customer, believe your personal information in regards to data is inaccurate or has been collected in an unlawful manner, you can request limited use of your personal data with Hostgator.

Your right to portability

Hostgator makes it easy to move your Hostgator account data over to a third party at any time you would like.

You have the right to object

If you, or your customer, decides for some reason that you no longer want to allow your data to be included with Hostgator’s analytics or for Hostgator to provide personalized marketing content, you can contact Hostgator at any time to request removal of this data.

Hostgator provides the necessary procedures so that they can comply with requests that you might have, and support you in completing any GDPR requests that come from your customers.

EU Consumer of Hostgator Services?

Most of the time, Hostgator is the controller in relation to your personal data that you provide to them as a customer.

Starting May 25, 2018, Hostgator will no longer publish the personal data information in regards to domain info in the WHOIS directory for EU residents.

Hostgator does this so that their WHOIS output is compliant with the GDPR law. Access to personal data in regards to domain name registrants could be granted when access is necessary for technical reasons like transfers, or for law enforcement when it’s legally entitled to receive such access.

Business owner that has EU customer data?

In some instances, you might be acting as the controller of data information. An example of this is when you are collecting information from either your contacts or email subscribers and that is uploaded or transferred into your Hostgator account.

You’ll have some additional obligations to comply with the GDPR. Make sure you properly understand what you need to do to comply in this instance.

Hostgator’s terms of service require you to obtain and process personal data lawfully and in a proper manner. Make sure you are doing this so you are compliant with the GDPR.

When it comes to web hosting providers, there are a lot of choices you can choose from. You might be asking yourself, why should I Choose Hostgator?

In this post, I’m going to be going in-depth about why you should choose Hostgator for your hosting needs.

5-reasons-to-choose-hostgator-web-hosting

Why Choose Hostgator Hosting | 5 Reasons Why

Why Choose Hostgator

Hostgator currently hosts over 8 million domains worldwide, and they have an excellent customer support team.

Most hosting companies have a 30-day money-back guarantee, but with Hostgator, you have a 45-day money-back guarantee.

Anytime, within the first 45 days, you can cancel and get a refund no questions asked. Just one of the many reasons why you should choose Hostgator.

Hostgator Hosting is Cost-Effective

When looking for a hosting provider, you want to make sure you get a hosting company that is not only affordable but has excellent service.

Hostgator hosting is cost-effective. You can get Hostgator hosting starting at $2.75 a month + a free domain name for annual plans or $4.99 for non-annual plans.

Hostgator has a bunch of excellent free features with their hosting.

These features include a free site builder, one-click WordPress install if you will be using WordPress for your site, Google and Bing Ad credits, a ton of free templates and themes for your site, and a free SSL Certificate.

Some of the more advanced features that Hostgator provides is unlimited domains and web hosting, ample disk space and bandwidth, unlimited email accounts and FTP accounts, Secure Shell, SSL Certificate, FTP, Stats, CGI, Ruby Perl, PHP, MySQL, 24/7 Phone, Chat and Email Support.

With Hostgator’s affordable hosting prices and free features this is just another of the many reasons on why we recommend you choose Hostgator for your hosting needs.

They have a bunch of hosting terms to choose from consisting of monthly hosting all the way up to 60 months.

Hostgator is User-Friendly

When choosing a web hosting provider, it’s important to make sure the hosting provider is user-friendly. Hostgator hosting is easy to use and very user-friendly.

Hostgator uses the most popular CPanel that you can get today. If you are unfamiliar with cPanel, it stands for Control Panel.

I’ve provided a screenshot below of the Hostgator cPanel or Control Panel.

hostgator-cpanel-dashboard

With its clean design, it makes building websites and blogs a breeze even if you are a newbie at creating sites.

In the Hostgator cPanel, you can easily edit your files, databases, accounts, domains, etc.

One of the things that are great about Hostgator’s cPanel is it includes SimpleScripts.

SimpleScripts is a one-click script installer that makes installing applications such as WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal quick and easy.

SimpleScripts make it an easy process to install your sites using WordPress which is one of the most popular web applications that is used today for building websites and blogs.

Here’s a post going over how to install WordPress on Hostgator addon domain.

Fast Page Loading Speed

An important thing to consider when you are choosing a web hosting provider is the hosting companies loading speed. You want to make sure your website loads quickly.

By having a slow load time on your site potential customers and visitors will abandon your site before they get to see what product, service, or offer you have to help them with.

Another critical reason to focus on page speed when choosing a hosting provider is that page speed is now a ranking factor that the major search engines like Google and Bing use when ranking sites. Hostgator hosting is known for its fast loading times.

Hostgator provides a CDN service, Cloudflare that allows you to speed up your site and provide extra security for your website.

Cloudflare is a great feature that Hostgator offers because if your site does go down for some reason if you are using Cloudflare, your site will stay up and running with no problem as Cloudflare keeps a cached copy of your website online for your site visitors or readers.

This very blog is hosted with Hostgator hosting and also utilizes the free Cloudflare feature, and I love everything about Hostgator and Cloudflare, especially the fast loading times. Just another reason on why choose Hostgator for your hosting needs.

99.9% Uptime

Along with the great speed that Hostgator offers they also guarantee all their customers with a 99.9% uptime. At almost all times Hostgator has 100% uptime.

A lot of hosting providers today say that they guarantee 99.9% uptime, but they tend to fail in delivering that promise. As you can assume this can be frustrating for customers using their hosting services as this can cost businesses lots of lost sales or returning readers.

Hostgator 24/7 Technical Support

Another great reason on why choose Hostgator is they provide 24/7 technical support via phone, chat, and email.

At any time, if you have a question, trouble with something, or a concern. Hostgator’s incredible support team will be there to help you with anything you need at all hours.

Hostgator also provides an excellent help support base where you can type any problem that you are having, and answers related to that will be presented to try to help you quickly without connecting to their support team.

I’ve found this feature very helpful at times and quicker than connecting to a chat agent, getting on the phone, or typing out an email.

I hope you found this why choose Hostgator post helpful.

As you can see from the five reasons we mentioned in this why choose Hostgator hosting article, Hostgator is an excellent choice, and we highly recommend that you choose Hostgator!

This very blog is hosted with Hostgator, and they’ve been nothing but excellent. Hostgator offers a 45-day money-back guarantee so if you aren’t happy for any reason just let them know and you can cancel and get a refund back!

One of the best plugins that can make starting your WordPress blog on Hostgator easier is the plugin called Elementor. Elementor page builder is a drag and drop editor for WordPress.

Elementor is the #1 WordPress page builder today, and over 500,000 users use it all around the world. This plugin can save you a ton of time and lots of headaches figuring out how to make specific customizations. This plugin has a free version and a paid version.

Lastly, in our how to start a WordPress blog with Hostgator guide I want to go over a bunch of resources that you might find helpful in your blog starting journey.

One of my favorite tools that bloggers use for creating blog graphics, social media graphics, and their logos is Canva.

Canva has pre-made professional templates for almost anything out there. The great thing about Canva is it is entirely free!

Another great resource that is popular is the freelancing platform Fiverr. You can get any task done for just $5. This is a great place to turn to if you need a logo created and can’t quite get it right on your own.
