I recommend you unselect this, but if you love the email from Google, you might want to keep this selected.

The addon site backup will backup your website daily and can be an excellent addon to have in case your site gets hacked into or goes down.

This addon will allow you to restore your site to a previous version right before the trouble started for your site with a click of a button.

Next, in our how to sign up for Hostgator hosting you will be at the section called enter a coupon code.

You should have already picked out the Hostgator coupon code you wanted to use in the previous step.

Domain Nameservers For Hostgator

Unlike Bluehost and Dreamhost, Hostgator does not have static nameservers for their hosting accounts.

An example of static nameservers is if you sign up with Bluehost or Dreamhost all users who purchase hosting will receive nameservers that are the same as everybody else.

For example, if you were to sign up with Bluehost your nameservers and everybody else’s nameservers would be ns1.bluehost.com and ns2.bluehost.com.

Since Hostgator doesn’t have static nameservers, everyone who purchases Hostgator hosting will have different nameservers based on their hosting plan.

A Common Reason To Get Your Hostgator Nameservers

One of the most common reasons you would need to get your Hostgator nameservers is if you registered your domain name with another domain registrar like Namecheap or Godaddy and you need to input your Hostgator nameservers so that your domain name points to your Hostgator account.

What Is A Primary Domain Name

Before we get into the steps on how to change primary domain in Hostgator let’s go over what a primary domain name is.

A primary domain name is the primary domain name that you choose and register with your domain provider which in this case would be Hostgator.

When you purchased your Hostgator hosting, you did one of three things. You registered a new domain name with Hostgator, transferred it from another domain registrar like Godaddy or Namecheap, or changed the nameservers of your domain name.

Hostgator Primary Domain Tips Before You Get Started

Some things to keep in mind regarding the Hostgator primary domain change:

  • When you update the primary domain from the Hostgator billing customer portal, it will change the primary domain on both the server and in the billing.
  • When adding a new primary domain to your Hostgator account make sure you have the domain name purchased.
  • If you have subdomains that are set up with your current primary domain or your primary domain is ran on a CMS like WordPress, Joomla, or Drupal then changing your domain name can cause issues with accessing your site. Make sure you are aware and take your time through the steps below in our how to change primary domain on Hostgator.

How To Change Primary Domain In Hostgator Cpanel

The first step in our how to change primary domain in Hostgator guide is to log in to the Hostgator Cpanel.

hostgator-cpanel-dashboard

Once logged in scroll down to the files section. You will see backups listed. Click this to continue changing your primary domain in your Hostgator account.

hostgator-files-backups

You will now be on the backup page.

hostgator-full-website-backup

Before we change the primary domain in Hostgator’s cPanel, we need to download a full website backup just in case any trouble happens. Better safe than sorry. Hostgator does provide a full site backup, but it’s done randomly once a week.

If something happens and you rely on Hostgator to backup your site just be aware more than likely you will be put in a support ticket queue to get your site back up and running.

You will see under the full backup section the button that says download a full website backup. Click this to continue in changing your primary domain in Hostgator.

full-backup-hostgator-cpanel

Next, just select the generate backup button, and then your backup will begin downloading.

generate-backup-hostgator

Next, from the Hostgator cPanel scroll down to the files section. Click on file manager to continue in changing your primary domain in your Hostgator account.

hostgator-file-manager

You want to create a new folder that is named after the old domain. Click the folder tab towards the top left menu to do this.

new-folder-hostgator-cpanel

Next, move the root files from the old domain name. I’ll call the old domain example.com. Make sure it’s not the files from the other sub-domain or addon domain folders.

You’re moving the root files of the old domain in which I’m calling example.com from /public_html to ?public_html/example.com.

Now, you will have two scenarios. You can assign an addon domain as the primary domain, or you can add the new domain to the account as an addon domain and making that the primary domain.

For example, if you had the domain previously added as an addon domain, then you would move the files from /public_html/newdomainname.com folder to /public_html.

If the domain name you want to use for the primary domain in your Hostgator account was recently bought or transferred from another domain registrar, you just need to upload the files directly in the ?public_html directory.

Next, in our how to change primary domain in Hostgator guide you will want to login to the Hostgator billing client area.

Click on the packages tab found towards the top left of the page.

hostgator-packages-customer-portal

Click the settings icon on the right side of the page. Click change my domain.

How To Create Addon Domain In Hostgator

If you signed up with Hostgator and purchased any plan other than the hatchling plan you can have an unlimited number of websites.

When having more than one domain name you have to buy each additional domain name that you want.

If you haven’t already purchased your addon domain otherwise known as an additional domain name I recommend Namecheap.

Namecheap is one of the top domain providers today and is cheaper than other domain providers.

With Namecheap, you get domain privacy free for life. No other domain provider offers this.

With Hostgator, you’ll pay around $12 to $15 bucks for your additional domain name plus you’ll spend another $10 to $15 buying domain privacy if you want that.

What Is A Hostgator Addon Domain?

Let’s start by answering a common question that is asked which is what a Hostgator addon domain is? An addon domain in Hostgator is a domain that you can create within your Hostgator Cpanel.

An excellent way to think of it is you have multiple Hostgator hosting packages, and they are all sharing the same Hostgator Cpanel.

With an addon domain, you can create email addresses, forwarders, and everything else you can do like your primary domain name.

To put it in simpler terms an addon domain is how you would add a second website to Hostgator.

The addon domain shares the same Hostgator Cpanel and the server. Hostgator offers unlimited addon domains for all of their hosting accounts except for the Hatchling plan.

If you purchased your additional domain name from Hostgator, you can move on to the next step as your nameservers will already be pointing to Hostgator.

If you purchased your domain name from another domain provider like Godaddy or my favorite domain provider Namecheap you will need to log in to your domain registrars dashboard and go to the nameservers section and input Hostgator’s nameservers.

Unlike Bluehost where they have static nameservers Hostgator’s nameservers are correspondent to the hosting server, you are on with Hostgator.

I’ll show you how to find your Hostgator nameservers so you can add them into your domain registrar’s nameservers section.

When you purchased Hostgator more than likely, you would have gotten your nameservers sent to you in your Hostgator welcome email.

If you have that email saved or it is easy to pull up, you can locate your Hostgator nameservers by pulling that up.

Another way to locate your Hostgator nameservers is to log in to your Hostgator Cpanel.

Once you are logged in to your Hostgator Cpanel, you will see a menu over to the left. Find preferences and click to move on to the next step to find your Hostgator nameservers.

Is Hostgator Hosting Good For A UK Site?

Is Hostgator Good For UK Hosting?

So is Hostgator good for sites in the UK? The answer to that question is yes, Hostgator is a wonderful choice for sites located in the UK.

Now, let’s go in-depth on why Hostgator is an excellent choice for sites located in the UK.

Below, I have answered the most popular questions that I see being asked online regarding is Hostgator good for UK hosting.

Will there be speed issues by using Hostgator over a hosting provider located in the UK?

Most sites in the UK that are hosted with Hostgator have almost the site speed as if a US visitor loaded the site.

We use Hostgator on this blog, and one thing that we implement is the free CDN service known as Cloudflare.

Cloudflare is entirely free, and it speeds up your site as well as making it more secure. Cloudflare acts as a proxy between your site visitors and the Hostgator servers.

Cloudflare has data centers all around the world. Cloudflare stores a cached copy of your site and will load your site from the closest data center to your site visitor.

Currently, Cloudflare has several data centers located throughout the UK and 200 data centers in total around the world.

UK Hosting companies are not as reliable as Hostgator

Hostgator provides competitive and affordable hosting prices compared to most hosting companies in the UK.

With Hostgator, you can get hosting for as low as $2.75 a month depending on what term you choose for your hosting plan.

Hostgator provides a 99.9% uptime guarantee and almost at all times it is at 100%. There’s a reason why Hostgator is one of the top web hosts today. Their hosting is reliable. I’ve never had any trouble with them.

Does Hostgator have UK based data centers or are all the data centers located in the USA?

Hostgator’s servers are not located in the UK. Hostgator’s servers are located in the United States. Hostgator’s data centers are located in Houston, Texas and Provo, Utah. You might be asking yourself.

If Hostgator’s servers are located in the US why would Hostgator be a good choice for sites based in the UK? The speed difference in the UK and US are minimal.

I use Hostgator on this very blog, and I actively get traffic and run traffic from the UK to my site, and the speed is not a problem.

What if I need to get a hold of Hostgator. Will the time difference be a problem?

Hostgator provides 24/7 support via chat, email, and phone. Hostgator is just a chat, email or phone call away. This is another excellent reason why Hostgator is good for a UK site.
