How To Point Namecheap Domain To Hostgator

When you purchase a domain name from a separate provider than you will be using for your hosting you will need to point your nameservers from the domain registrar to the hosting provider.

The domain registrar, in this case, is Namecheap, and the web hosting provider is Hostgator.

Once you have purchased your web hosting from Hostgator your account will come with specific nameservers.

You want to point Hostgator’s nameservers to Namecheap.

The process is quick and easy, and you will have it complete within minutes by following this how to point Namecheap domain to Hostgator guide.

Let’s start by pointing your Namecheap domain to Hostgator’s nameservers.

Hostgator Nameservers:

To find your Hostgator nameservers, you can find it via the welcome email they sent you right after your purchased Hostgator hosting.

Another way you can find your nameservers is to log in to your Hostgator Cpanel.

Once logged in find the preferences tab over to the left.

Next, scroll down a bit and over on the far right under General Information you will find your Hostgator nameservers listed.

Next, log into your Namecheap account and update Namecheap’s nameservers to Hostgator’s nameservers.

From the Namecheap dashboard click on domain list found in the left menu.

Namecheap will now list out all the different domain names you have purchased with them.

Find the Namecheap domain you want to point to Hostgator and click on the manage button found on the far right.

You will now be directed to the Namecheap domain management page. Scroll down till you see NAMESERVERS. You will see Custom DNS with an arrow next to it. Click the arrow and select Custom DNS.

It will now bring up a Namecheap nameservers tab where you want to put in your custom nameservers from Hostgator.

Here’s an example. Make sure you don’t add these nameservers as these may not be your Hostgator nameservers.

Once you input your Hostgator nameservers, you need to click the green checkmark. This will point your domain name to Hostgator’s servers.

Once you point your domain name from Namecheap to Hostgator, it can take up to 48 hours for the changes to take effect.

So be patient and don’t worry if you see your site showing Namecheap’s default page temporarily.

From what I’ve always experienced your site will usually start showing within 20 minutes to an hour.

You will be on the Namecheap home page where you want to search for a domain name and see if it is available. Once you type in your domain name, click the orange search button to the right to see if your domain name is available.

If it’s available, you’re in luck! You want to make sure you grab it before it’s gone. If for some reason you find that the domain name you wanted isn’t available Namecheap will provide you with similar names for you to choose.

You could try changing your domain extension. For example, .com, .net, .org, etc. Want to try another domain name? Just go back to the previous page where you were searching and try again.

It is very common to try several attempts until you find one that is available. Don’t worry if this happens to you.

Once you find the domain name that you want to purchase you want to select the shopping cart button found over on the right of the domain name.

If you want to purchase more than one domain name, you can do so now. Click back to the domain search feature and start adding your domain names to the cart.

Once you have your domain name ready click the view cart button found over on the right to move on to the next step where we will go over how to buy a domain name from Namecheap.

How To Buy A Domain Name From Namecheap

You will find all the domain names that you are going to register with Namecheap show up. You will see where you can select for how long you want to purchase your domain name for.

Select the time frame you would like. You will see auto-renew next to the year selection. You can either keep this off or turn it on. I usually keep this on so that I don’t risk the domain name expiring and someone grabbing it.

Next, you will see WhoisGuard. This feature comes free for life with all Namecheap domain name purchases. This feature keeps your personal contact information private so that spammers and telemarketers don’t get a hold of your personal contact information. Instead of listing your contact details in the whois database it’ll showcase Namecheap’s.

You will see PremiumDNS. You can enable it or keep it disabled. I recommend you keep it disabled, but the choice is yours.

You will see improve your site with some options. You can go through these to see if you would like to add any to your domain name purchase with Namecheap. I recommend you keep these unselected as they aren’t necessary. The choice is yours though.

Click the orange confirm order button to proceed in registering your domain name with Namecheap.

You want to create your account with Namecheap now. Fill out all the information and click the create account and continue button at the bottom.

You will now be at the final step in registering your domain name with Namecheap. You want to make your payment using either Paypal or a credit card.

Once completed your domain name will be activated within 5 minutes. Once it is activated, you can start using it immediately. Namecheap will also email you your Namecheap login credentials and receipt of payment.

How To Point Namecheap Domain To Bluehost

When you buy a domain name from a separate company, you will need to point the nameservers to the web hosting company you are using such as Bluehost.

When you purchase web hosting from a hosting provider the hosting account will come with very specific nameservers.

When you buy your domain name from a domain registrar, you have to make sure you change your nameservers to point to your web hosting provider.

The process is quick and easy so don’t worry if it sounds complicated. Below, I show you how to point Namecheap domain to Bluehost.

We want to point your Namecheap domain to Bluehost’s nameservers.

Bluehost’s nameservers:

  • ns1.bluehost.com
  • ns2.bluehost.com

Log into your Namecheap account and update the nameservers to Bluehost’s as mentioned above.

When you log into Namecheap, you want to click on domain list over on the left-hand side.

Once you do this, it’s going to list out all of your domains that you currently own via Namecheap.

Find the Namecheap domain name you want to point to Bluehost and click on the manage button to the far right.

You will be on a domain management page. You want to scroll down until you see NAMESERVERS. You will see Custom DNS with an arrow to the right of it where you can make a selection. You want to select Custom DNS.

It’s going to bring up a nameservers tab where you want to add your custom nameservers from Bluehost.

Add the following Bluehost nameservers:

  • ns1.bluehost.com
  • ns2.bluehost.com

Once you add Bluehost’s nameservers, you want to click the green checkmark. This will point your domain name to Bluehost’s servers.

I do want to warn you that it can take up to 24 hours for these changes to take effect. So be patient and don’t worry if you are routed to Namecheap’s default page temporarily.

However, from what I have always seen on my sites is the site showing up correctly within 20 minutes to an hour.
